Dylan Ferrandis stays second in the world in Thailand

Dylan Ferrandis of Team CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy retained second place in the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship after the Thailand GP at Si Racha despite problems with the fuel provided locally.

All teams were prevented from bringing their regular fuel by an embargo on the import of dangerous goods by the Thai government, and Kawasaki was one of the manufacturers most adversely affected by the fuel provided locally. The alternative fuel had a lower boiling point resulting in vapour lock and an intermittent loss of power which made racing exceedingly dangerous on a track with many large jumps.

After a dramatic victory in the qualification race Ferrandis held a challenging second place during the first half of the opening GP moto until water thrown up by the rear wheel of the leader affected his vision and forced the young Frenchman to surrender two places before the finish. He appeared to be on the way to a second consecutive GP podium finish as he homed in on the top three in race two until his motor began to run erratically through the closing laps and he had to be content with defending his position. Despite this the teenager returns to Europe still holding second place in the world championship standings.

Arnaud Tonus rode strongly through the second half of the opening moto to close down the leaders and cross the line in third place, but encountered difficulties already on the opening lap of the second race after starting third and had to fight back from twenty-third position. After advancing positively to ninth, he encountered further problems with the fuel which, adding several seconds to his lap times, prevented further advances. Nevertheless the Swiss rider has retained a top five world ranking.

Alessandro Lupino finished eighth overall in the GP after crossing the line eighth and seventh in the two motos to join his teammates in the top nine of the world championship standings.

Tommy Searle, the CLS contender in the MXGP world championship, started strongly in fourth place in the opening moto but suffered a heavy crash when his engine cut out as he launched over a massive jump and the English rider crashed heavily, breaking a wrist in two places.

Dylan Ferrandis: “It was a tough weekend for us. It was difficult to breathe on the track but everyone had the same problems. In the first race I had a good start and was a close second went the leader rode through a puddle; I got water in my goggles and had to take off my tear off, and later I made a few mistakes to lose two places. My second start was not as good; I started fifth but had caught back up to Coldenhoff when I had problems with the engine. I just missed a podium result but I’m happy to fly back to Europe second in the championship after this GP, which is probably the most difficult of the series.”

Arnaud Tonus: “I had a good feeling this weekend, and after the opening race I was happy with my third position even if it took me some time to find a good rhythm. My second start was good and I was third when the engine stalled during the first lap. I recovered to ninth, and was expecting to progress even further but in the last ten minutes I again had troubles with the engine and I just managed to hold in to my position.”

Alessandro Lupino: “I can’t say that I’m happy tonight, but it was better than last week and I know that we must continue to work hard. I don’t feel fit at the moment and I can’t push as I would like to, but the problem is in my mind. I miss making good starts and it was tough to make my way through the pack; there are a lot of fast riders this year but I know that I have the speed to get some podium results.”
